Workforce Housing Solutions in Line to Redevelop Rosenwald Building
Workforce Housing Solutions, Inc, a Chicago-based developer of workforce housing, is in line to acquire and redevelop The Rosenwald Building, a historic 447-unit apartment building. The building is currently vacant and sits on an entire city block located at 47th Street and Michigan Boulevard.
The Rosenwald Apartments were built in 1929 by Julius Rosenwald, then co-founder of Sears Roebuck and Company, as one of the largest workforce housing developments in the country at its time. The Rosenwald Apartments were modeled after workforce housing developments in Vienna and New York. The Rosenwald Apartments are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the buidling is listed as one of the ten most endangered buildings in the United States.
Workforce Housing Solutions plans to redevelop the building into a mixed-use, mixed-income workforce housing community incorporating approximately 100 for-sale condominiums and 233 rental apartments, along with 13,400 square feet of commercial retail space and parking for 350 cars. The complex will serve the workforce housing needs of area employers such as the University of Chicago Hospitals, The Chicago Industrial Stockyards, McCormick Place and Michael Reese Hospital. The developer plans shuttle service to and from the complex to these employers.
The total project cost is $65 Million.
